I have 6 apple trees that need pruning badly, and was wondering if now would be a good time to do it. Half of what I can find says winter and the other half says late fall or early spring.

I grew up on an apple orchard, and have spent many a winter day pruning more trees than I care to say.

Winter is the ideal time to prune them since the trees are dormant. DO NOT, however do so when the temperatures are below 25 degrees F. The sap will not be flowing and the cuts will not heal properly. It can cause winter damage to the tree.

Yes this is the time of year to prune. Be sure to prune the middle limbs to allow light to get to the middle of the tree this will provide more apples.

Apple trees produce fruit on second third and fourth year would. A common mistake among home pruners is they think a lot of times that the first year wood is suckers so the cut it all off. you do that for a few years and you wount have any fruit. If you care about the tree and like have a professional come out and see if he can see what your doing wrong. however its always going to be cheaper to buy your fruit then maintain a healthy orchard.

February is an excellent time for heavy pruning! The pruning paint is no longer recommended. A dormant oil spray would also be good. Have fun.

I always prune when winter is at it's coldest and the tree's sap is withdrawn deep into the tree.
