Chinchillas are the cleanist animal in the rodent family that you can own. There fur is very dense. They about 20-30 hairs per follicle, as opposed to out 1 or 2. They can not get fleas, which is a plus. They bath is a particular "dust bath," especially if you handle it a lot. The oil from you hands will make them look oily. Just provide him with dust baths. Feed them specific chinchilla food only. The rabbit and gerbil foods do not have the specific nutrients that a chin needs. I have one and would trade him for the world. He is great. He knows his name, he comes when called. They can learn very simple commands. They are actually verry intellegent. They love to chew, so make sure you have them many wooden chew toys. They cage should be the largest that you can afford, and I actually recommend that you have someone build one. If you go to web site, like google and type in chinchilla cages, this will give you several ideas. Chins are great animals. They don't bite. They will "nibble" you to see if you are eatable. They are the cutest creatures in the world. I would highly recommend a chin to someone that does not have very small children in the house. They are nocturnal animals. Make sure that you have somewhere, kinda away from your bedroom, because they love to play at night time. I hope that this has helped.

they dont stink as long as thier environment is kept clean. They require a special dust bath and that makes a HUGE mess. I used to have chinchillas and not only was there dust everywhere, there were ALWAYS droppings outside the cage. I dont know if it was because they were always running around but they lived in a 4 story cage, it was a pain. But they were great pets.

Chinchilla's are not a stinky animal as long as they are provided a clean living space and regular dust baths. They can be messy, they do chew anything they can and poo any chance they get but it's not hard to do a quick vacuum after they are out playing, mine do like to throw their pine bedding around when they remodel their cage, but clean up is easy but putting a chair mat under the cage.

They love attention and look forward to company if you get the right chin for you.

My girlfriend had one for a while. He ended up getting sick and died.

Lots of dust, lots of poop and they are nocturnal, so don't have them in a bedroom (like she did). You will be up all night. They're cute though. And I've heard they can live for a long time (20 years or more)...
