My uncle brought some paintings over from India. I'd say those really did the trick for his house.

I live in India. I can understand your problem. When an Indian goes out of India, he feels very sad whenever he finds something related to India. And There is no doubt one will cry when the National Anthem is Played. You said that you are giving your son Indian culture, It is very good. Believe me here in India many people are becoming more western and forgetting our culture, I think your son is real Indian then many people here... Sad though many people here are more Western than Indian. What I think of NRI's? Sometime back I was against them, but considering that you are doing much for India, I respect you. But Sir, you need to help small children, old people, I mean to say you should help the poor people of India. Please help the poor people, like children, adults etc. Somedays back I saw on TV a child who required a Heart operation for which she didn't have money. Isn't it better to help those people? What more happiness or help can be more than that?

One thing for sure you have to have is things made from Sandalwood - as the aroma is that of India.
You should also have a carved sandalwood elephant - trunk up and facing a door. In fact, get a whole bunch - I did.
Draperies are important too - take fabric and make window coverings. An embroidered bed cover with Indian design. Pillows.
Perhaps a set of Indian dishes.
Hows that for starters? Have fun shopping.

Namaste,
Every time I go there, I end up bringing handicrafts.....such as wooden elephants, small sandalwood crafts and Saree's (these are a great idea because you can use them as drapes or make pillows etc etc).
For the most part, you can find almost everything these days from local Indian stores here in US.
I also plan on having hand carved furniture shipped to US from the state of Rajestan in the near future.

People who live outside India take some things from India so that they could remember India or they may feel they are in India.Mostly people take food and spices as it is not available outside India even if it is available outside India it's taste would not be the same.

it depends entirely on what makes u remember of your ties & links wth India. as u know each state has its own handicrafts. either u could have a blend from different states or u could set a theme & get things accordingly. but please do remember not to overdo it & turn your home into a museum. keep things which link u with India but in moderation & good taste.

Mostly items will includes clothing, religious items,... difficult to say,
