HP thumbs up! Their support is better and Dell has a unique way of puttin a PC together that requires you to buy replacement parts from Dell which cost a fortune!

Overall, I would say HP because of their Customer Service. As for the computer itself, both HP and Dell get their hardware from the same companies. Its not based upon different companies that build the computers, but based on the specs of the computer. If you buy a computer for $400, you are paying for what you get. If you buy a computer for $1000, of course it is going to be better then the $400 computer because it will have hardware with higher performance. As for the whole,"my dells HD failed after 3 years" bit, thats because most people dont know how to take care of their computers. I have had my Dell since 2001, and it runs smoother than all of my friends computers that they only had for 1 year or less, because I know how to take care of it.

HP. Dell is the last place you should get a computer from. They are cheap, and HP is reasonable. They have the best line of computer products as far as I know.
I got a computer from Dell, and after about 3 years, the hard drive failed on me.

I'd have to vote for Dell. Consumer Reports rates their quality as the highest - better than HP. In the long run you save money by going for quality. And I trust Consumer Reports over personal experience. Everyone thinks that what they have is the best and the others are trash.
