Yes, you need a router to share a connection, or basically use the internet on both computers at the same time. Routers help share the connection, and you can choose the connection. What I mean is you can use one computer's connection on both.

To set it up, you need the following:

1) Router or Ethernet DSL Modem
2) Etherenet cables (1 for each computer)
3) An Internet service

I would reccomend getting DSL. The connection is fast and you can use the phone when you are on the internet, unlike dial-up. Verizon Online DSL is fast, and has a low monthly fee.

To use a router, both computers must have network adapters installed. Connect an ethernet cable to the router first and then to the computer. Ethernet cables look like phone lines. Then start up the machines, and do the following:

1) Click start, then all programs.
2) Go to accessories, then communications, then network setup wizard
3) Then follow the instructions to finish.

Good luck!

After a bit of looking the following link has a good 'how to' for setting up a router. The type really does not matter so much other then the features it offers as far as setup and firewall are concerned. If you are not to worried about that then I would say go with the cheapest you can find.

There is also a page that explains the different things to look for on a router

There are two ways you could conect your sons computer to the internet. The easiest way would be to get an ADSL modem router which can connect up to 4 computer to the internet using the same modem. If your computers are close enough together then you could connect each one to the modem using an ethernet cable but if his computer is in a different room then it would be easier to buy a wirless connector such as a network card or a USB adaptor. This would enable you sons computer to receive the internet signal from your main computer without any cables or wires running around the house. We have a "Belkin" Wirless G Router with USB connector and i would highly recommend them. They have a brilliant technical support line which helped us to set it all up and we have never had any problems.

Whether you want a wireless or wired network, you will need a router and ethernet cables & cards.

Most newer computers have an ethernet card built-in. To check, see if your computers have an "over-sized telephone port." Then all you need to do is connect everything.

check newegg.com for good deals on these things.

Hope this helps!
