The sound driver is missing. You can install it from a CD (it should have came with the computer) or you can download it from the manufacturer's website.
Good luck!

Obviously the volume levels must be checked along with changing the set of speakers and reinstalling the sound cards drivers. If none of these seem to work your sound card may have broken. If you have another card at home try it and see if it makes a difference to anything. My old soundblaster did that and now im using a yamaha based thing.

Go to start/settings/control panel/sounds and audio devices
on the volume tab click the 'advanced' button and verify the sources are not muted.
You might also try selecting a different speaker configuration on the volume tab.
Good Luck

If none of the above work try borrowing a sound card from a friend's computer. If the sound now works, you've got a busted sound card and need to buy a new one.

First, check that your speakers are plugged in and powered up, them check to see if all the volume controls are turned up, and I mean all of them, if you are running xp left click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand tray and click on open volume control, I would almost bet an application turned one of your controls off!

reinstall the driver for your sound card. You may have a cd that came with your pc for the sound driver. In case you dont have the cd download a program to scan your hardware:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/WinDriver-Expert.shtml
Then go to the manufacturer's website and download the driver from there.

mute? double click on the speaker icon on bottom right corner of your screen and make sure all mute boxes are unchecked.
Also make sure you got the jack plugged in the "out" socket.
