I work at a bank, transferring a few years ago to this department. My old boss got promoted, making his position available. I’m applying for it, interview on Friday.

- The guy interviewing me is my old boss, to whom I reported for 4 years. I have a good working relationship with him, and he always gave me above-average evaluations.
- I currently work in a business casual environment. My old area is even more casual. The interview is on casual Friday.
- The interview is in his office, smack in the middle of “BlueJeans-ville”.
- This is a position that manages 40+ people at this bank.
- My co-workers don't know about the interview.

Given that it is Friday, and I don’t want to stand out (especially to my current co-workers), I would like to be casual. But it is a management position at a bank, and so I want to look appropriate.

It’s not like my old boss doesn’t know who I am. Do I dress normally, and trust he won’t consider my dress as a lack of professionalism?

If it were me, I'd spiff it up just a bit to give a positive impression. How would you appear at the bank on any other given day but Friday? It's good to keep in mind that even though you have a great working relationship with your bosses, they do look at professionalism and evaluate on those lines as well. So, if the other employees ask you 'why' you're dressed, just tell them you had a fancy breakfast to go to earlier and you didn't bother to go home to change first. That will satisfy their curiosity.

Dress professionally, as if the interview was with another company. It shows respect for the person you are interviewing with and respect for the position. No matter how good your working relationship is with your old boss, he is expecting you to prove to him why you are the best candidate for the position. Your attire is the first thing he will notice.

And if anyone asks you why you are so dressed up on a Friday, just say that you felt like it, if you don't want anyone to know about the interview. Or you could bring along a change of casual clothes to change into after the interview if you don't want to wear dress clothes all day.

Wear a suit. It is still an interview and you want your new boss to think that you are serious about the position, wear a suit to the interview on casual Friday. Other people he will interview will be wearing suits. Take it serious and wear a suit. If you want you can change into comfortable clothing after the interview is over.

You know what.. there is nothing at all wrong if you approach the boss and ask him if he wouldn't mind if you interviewed in casual dress.

And since he is more than familiar with you... he will probably have no issue with it.
