Insert the disk. Goto My computer and then right click on the drive in which the dvd-ram disk is and select FORMAT on the pop up menu. Select FAT32 in the file system drop down box. then click start (this may not work on your PC).
Some dvd-writers may require you to install additional utility/driver to perform this function. You might also have to turn off Windows XP's built in cd-writing software. http://www.wibble.co.uk/DVD-RAM/index.html
Alternatively you can use packet writing software like nero Incd to format the disk and use it like you would a hard disk.
EDIT: For windows 2000 or lower you will have to use packet writing software. Only windows XP has minimal support for DVD-RAM in the form of the FAT32 format from my computer. I am not sure how VISTA handles DVD-RAM.

Very rarely are floppy's and floppy drives used anymore. In fact, I would hazard to say that unless spec'd out (specifically added), you would not find a pc on the market today with a floppy drive installed in it. No, you can't 'cut a CD-rom smaller - completely different technologies and they're no where near compatible. You can NOT buy floppy disks that hold over 1.44mb -- you can store more than 1.44mb on a floppy by "zipping" the data which would compress it down to a size smaller than 1.44mb if it can. The old 5 1/4" floppy disks held roughly 90-100k of data. NO, WinXP would not be able to read an old 5 1/4" floppy even if you could get a drive to hook up to the computer. Sorry... (besides, Apple connections were usually SCSI, serial, or AppleTalk - 9 pin din and were only compatible with Apple products.) Hope this helped. Maggie

I think that what you want is something that you are not asking for.
That's not a problem.
There are 2 types of dvd drive, one records , one plays only . What you need is a dvd re-writer, ( one that records) Then you need a dvdrw disc. This can be re - written on.
Then you need to format the disc ( not you HARD DRIVE !)
You can then use it like your hard drive, it will act and look the same, but it will only have 4.5 GB of memory. If this helps try my site you may like it.

Check the samsung webpage for your drive - and see if a firmware upgrade is available for that model to support DVD-RAM use.
Not all DVD writers support DVD-RAM out of the box, as it is not a widely used system anymore.
If all else failse, you might need to consider getting a DVD writer that does support it.
