You bet it can. As a matter of fact that is about the best way to simply dehydrate an alcohol.

dehydration reaction of alcohol or dehydration of solvent? they are 2 very different things and HCl can be used, but for the second option you need to consult handbook of organic chemistry to make sure you can dry and keep your solvent dry
