Yes, he had gone to the grocery store, and passed out, (heart attack ) and died at the hospital.....they filmed it right after he died , very touching, everyone on show cries.

His character did also die in the series.
He goes out for some milk from the supermarket and never returns.
Following a break the show returned on November 4, 2003 with a one hour episode, "Goodbye", dedicated to Ritter's death. Subsequent episodes dealt with the family's reaction to his death and their moving on. The first four post-Ritter episodes were shot without a live audience, in a respectful transition from the shock of his passing.

Yes, he die in the series as well as real life. I saw the episode and remember it something like this; he went to the store, suffered a heart attack while shopping and died in the hospital.
