One very important thing that happened in the '50s was the HUGE earthquake in China called the "Shaanxi Earthquake". It happened on January 23, 1956, and killed almost a million people (830,000 + to be exact). It is labeled the FOURTH worst natural disaster in history. For more info, see the following link;

If your project is limited to the United States, then I'm not sure. You might search for specific "disasters" like "tornados", "floods", "earthquakes", etc.
Otherwise, there was a big earthquake in Alaska in 1964 (but, of course it wasn't in the '50s)...

I am sorry, I have tried many ways and can not delete this It is wrong ..............1950, paper mate made its first leak free pen, fashion changed to hippie,bell & western elect. created the telephone answer mach. antihistamines entered for the treatment of allergies and head colds. 51 super glue invented , chrysler introduced power steering. 53, first 3D movie. Hurricane Hazel (I believe it was 1956). It hit Toronto and caused major damage and some deaths.
