Joe Mantana. (I see I have many that agree with me) A very talented QB that could engineer a slaughtering or come back with amazing calmness. Of course, he had ALOT of talent around him though. I also believe his brute TOUGHNESS kept him on the field so that he could perform so often.

Barry Sanders- retired with more yards than emmitt smith and was younger. He played for a horrible team. If he had not retired he would be the all time leading rusher by far. Also has more yards than Jim Brown.

Joe Montana, the greatest QB and player and comeback engineer ever...if the game is on the line, with the exception of Tom Brady, there's no one better to handle the ball.

Johnny Unitas.

He was football's ultimate underdog. He played longer and harder than almost any modern day player.

The meanest? Jack 'SPLAT' Lambert.
It is said that he was so mean, he hated himself. Pound for pound the meanest, toughest guy to play the game. It is a close call with Butkus though.
