Whatever the lease says is the "legal" answer BUT if there is nothing in the lease about the washer you might be wise to consider sharing in the cost. If use of the laundry facilities is not mentioned in anyone's lease then the landlord can just stop offering you use of it and you could be lugging your wash to the laundrymat and spending $4-$5 a load to wash and dry it. Think before you make a decision on this one.

Only if it's in the lease agreement, or if it was broken out of negligence or malice on the part of the renter(s).

Usually the landlord is responsible for keeping and maintaining all fixtures and equipment that were part of the residence being leased, but you need to check the agreement and state codes to see if there is an exception in the case of the washer.

I am not sure how washing a comforter would damage the machine. I wash mine all of the time.

Does the person who broke the machine admit to causing damage? Can anyone prove the damage was caused by a particular person?

Does your lease say that repairs will be split equally among the renters?

depends on what your lease says. assuming you have one.if there is not anything specific about repairs to appliances, then you shouldn't be responsible. in my experience as a renter, whenever i had to call the landlord over repairs to the washer and dryer the landlord picked up the tab since they furnished it and there was nothing specific written in our lease regarding repairs. machines break down from time to time and if they are furnished by the landlord then they assume all maintenance and repair costs unless they break down due to gross negligence. good luck dealing with your landlord.

Ha ha, that's a good one. I would decline to pay. But of course then maybe you won't get to use the new machine.

If your portion is less than $50 bucks, I guess I'd cave in and pay, just to keep peace. But I've never done such a thing and have had roommates for years. If they broke my china, well then, they had to pay. But that was preagreed, since the china was not really for the roommate. Only happened once. ha ha..when he found out that one plate was $65 he didnt use it anymore.

Roommates are a cool gig. Just do what makes sense.

Best of luck,

READ THE LEASE!!!! If it says you are then you are. If it doesn't say you are not.
