i have just bought a nvidia 7950GT OC 512MB graphics card but i didn't relize about direct X 10 won't work on it or will they be an update for to to run direct x 10 games?

Just because a video card is Vista ready/capable does NOT mean it is a direct X 10 capable card. Vista will have a compatible version of Direct X 9 so that DX9 cards can still use it. However you will not be able to take advantage of ANY direct X 10 capabilities of the system nor will you be able to run any applications solely made for DX10. However, DX10 games/programs are a long way away and by the time you end up finding a program that requires it you will most likely want to upgrade your computer again anyway.
The only DX10 cards currently are the 8xxx series from Nvidia. ATI has yet to even release a DX10 card. Lower end Nvidia 8 series are supposedly coming out within the next couple of months.
Did you make a bad purchase? That depends on if you are currently running Vista or XP and if you are worried about a DX10 game coming out soon (which they aren't).

You have not made a mistake because this video card is very good. It can run Direct X 10, because it comes with Windows Vista, which includes Direct X 10.
I wouldn't recommend getting Vista, since it has malfunctions.

Remember in the world of commerce the rule is 'buyer beware'. You bought the wrong item - sell it on Ebay and go and buy the right product. Write off the transaction to experience.

Um, this card was built to run on windows vista, why in the world would you think 10 will not run on it, as vista comes with 10?

No you will never be able to upgrade that card to dx10.
So it will never be able to play DX10 games.
But it's too early for DX10 anyways , so enjoy your card.
The cheapest DX10 cards out now are like 450$
