Sounds like you either have 2 hard drives or if your recently purchased a system you have a partition on your hard drive where you have your system restore data stored, if this is the case you might want to make sure that you make your system restore cd's before you wipe the partition out, if you have made the system restore disk's or if this is just an empty partition you can then wipe the partition out and get a software like Acronis ( http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/ )or PartitionMagic ( http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=sp&pvid=pm80 ) where you can then merge the partitions together with out having to erase your whole system and then reinstall your operating system.

On the other hand if you don't mind wiping everything out, then backup your data, reinstall Windows on your system with your Windows CD, erase both partitions and create one.

If you have a second hard drive on your system you can merge both hard drives and one, (I don't recomend doing this becuase if one hard drive fails everythimg you have is gone) but if your set on having only one drive letter show up you can once again do it the easy way with Acronis or PartitionMagic, or do the following:

1st Backup all Drives

2nd convert all drives to NTFS if they are not already
a. Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
b. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

3rd convert all drives to Dynamic Disks
a. Open Computer Management (Local).
b. In the console tree, click Computer Management (Local), click Storage, and then click Disk Management.
c. Right-click the basic disk you want to convert, click Convert to Dynamic Disk, and then follow the instructions on your screen.

4th you can now either begin creating mounting expanding volumes or extending volumes.

For the full details of how to perform these functions go to microsoft's website and perform a search on dynamic disks, mounting, extending, expanding and spanning volumes.

Just save new files to the D drive.

You can use Windows Explorer to copy and paste, or cut and paste files from the C drive to the D drive.

You will only want to copy or move your own files to the D drive. Like songs, pictures, and the like.

Backup D was created by the manufacturer to store system backup info in case of any problems you may have.
