Steve Martin did a theatrical movie called "Leap of Faith" about a conman evangelist; not sure if that's what you're thinking of.

Was it the mini-series Celebrity w/Michael Beck, Joseph Bottoms and Ben Masters? They were teenagers and thought they killed a girl after she was raped by Beck's character and then Beck's character TJ becomes a TV evangelist? You can get more information on this at imdb.com
