Assuming you just don't want to cut them and let them falI or don't have room to drop them. Then, I have done this. You start by cutting the bottom branches off but leaving about 6-8 inches from the trunk. You keep cutting from the bottom up until you need a ladder. You can then support the ladder against the branch stubs that have been cut off. Once you get the topo of the ladder you can climb the stubs of the tree like steps. (put a safety belt around you and the tree just to be on the safe side). Then when you have about 10-12 ft left from the top throw a rope around one of the middle or upper branches of the top section, pull a slip knot to it so it is tight then let the rest of the rope fall to the ground.

Then cut a knotch out of the side of the tree in the direction you want the tree to fall. Then cut on a slight downward angle from the other side of the notch toward the notch. You will see the top start to lean the more you cut it. Cut it about 2/3 of the way to the notch. then get down from the tree. Get the end of the rope, making sure it is long enough so that you are out of the way when it fall, pull the rope so as to break the rest of the tree trunk.

Repeat for the lower sections

Cutting Down Conifers

Ahh that's a bummer conifers are awesome plants to have in the garden. I guess maybe its because your aunt in older and doesn't want the maintenance, but conifers are great shade in the summer and can help keep the summer bills down. Maybe depending on what type of evergreen you are dealing with you can make a compromise and trim the tree and give it a tight shape something that can be easily maintain by someone once a year.

Put a ladder in a tree and go up about 20 feet. Tie a rope around the tree and then Tighten the rope around a stake in the ground. The tree should then fall in the direction of the stake. Cut a notch in the tree on the stake side, then go behind the tree and cut horizontally toward the notch. The tree will fall in the direction of the stake, if there is no wind and the rope is tight. Cut it into firewood size pieces and some one will steal it.

I should have asked what kind of conifer tree it was pine, spruce arborvitae. So I'll guess its a pine or spruce now. The answer I gave earlier is still the way I would go but cut your bottom limbs like another has said, being since your a novice to cutting trees for your safety I still suggest a bow saw till you get low enough on the tree to feel safe with a chain saw.

assuming you have open space to drop the tree, take a chainsaw and cut a wedge out of the tree in the direction you want it to fall. cut it about waist high and then go to the other side and cut a straight line through it and the wieght of the tree will snap it before it gets all the way through. then yell timber. make sure their is no wires around it and it isn't going to fall on anything
