1st generation has:
-a round-edged stainless steel back with a flat clear acrylic face (that scratches really easily) and a colored layer underneath
-comes in 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB models, all of which come with either black or white faces, which means you weren't restricted by capacity if you wanted a specific color or forced to buy a specific color based on what capacity you wanted
2nd generation has:
-a full anodized aluminum casing (the color is impregnated into the surface of the metal, unlike paint which bonds to the surface) with rounded sides, but squared off top and bottom (where the 1st gen version draws its basic design from the 5G Video, the 2nd gen draws its design from the Mini)
-comes in 2GB (silver only), 4GB (pink, green, or blue only), or 8GB (black only) models. There is also a Product Red model (4GB or 8GB) that's bright red and some of the proceeds are donated to the Product Red fund, which is used to combat AIDS in Africa.
-has a brighter screen than before
-has more battery life than before
-has a Search function which is not supported on the 1st Gen nano
-each of the three basic price points gives you double the previous capacity while maintaining the same MSRP as before

look ipod nano 4th gen is okay yet when u get it, i will discover u and slap you. Get the contact, 8gb ipod nano 4th gen is one hundred sixty money and 8g contact is 220 So is it extremely extremely well worth the better 60 money??? convinced DEFINETELY please get the contact its much better effective, touchscreen, better effective interface, video games, internet, msn and much better look im in hardship-free words telling u this because I made this mistake on yuletide. I were given the nano 4th extremely of the contact I wuz stupid so dont be like me ok!

2nd gen - brighter display , longer battery life , 'search' function , better housing (not so easily scratched).. cheaper.. more colourful.
