It can be from a slight hearing deficiency, or the teeth and mouth configuration can make it hard to enunciate the "n."
There are also people that have difficulty processing some sounds, because of congenital brain defects. Sometimes it is simpy a language barrier that has been passed from a previous generation, of cultures that don't observe Valentines Day.

These are also the reasons why when speaking to give spelling, say, over the phone, we clarify by saying, "F" as in Frank, or "M" as in Mary. Many people have difficulties distinguishing between F and S sounds or M and N sounds. The placement of a letter in a word can cause its sound to be more difficult to pronounce for some, too. People say "supposebly" instead of "supposedly." It makes them seem ignorant, and one might wonder why it never gets corrected; it is ingrained from their type of hearing reception and learning (or absence of) from an early age.

Many years ago, a totally blind radio personality named Don Vogel, now deceased, had an afternoon drive-time show on KSTP AM 1500 transmitted from Saint Paul, Minnesota. One of his tag-lines was, "let a blind man drive you home."
He did many voice impersonations; one of them was Mr.T.
Using that voice, he often said, "Happy Valentimes Day; don't be crazy!".
This phrase has stuck with my wife and me all these years; it has become a regular part of our verbal repertoire.
I am sure that Don Vogel was not the first person to pronounce it this way, but for us it is still the most fondly remembered.

It's one of those weird things people say, like "barnes and nobles" instead of "barnes and noble."
actually it's a process that's been documented throughout history... the consonants in words tend to get softened and slurred over time - it's one way languages evolve.
I'm not excusing people's bad language ;)... just pointing out that it's got precedent.

The same reason people say supposably instead of supposedly.

Their parents probably taught it to them the wrong way. My husband's mother is from Germany and has a heavy accent. He used to say all sorts of things wrong.

There are others like Birfday, wromg, punkin and even sayings like "house shoes".....they're slippers for pete's sake!

For the same reason they say "axe" when they mean "ask".

It makes me crazy, too - almost as much as when people use a "z" instead of an "s" to pluralize their words!

:)

Tee hee - I love Bombshell's response - so appropriate!
