why not, who is stopping me from eating this cake?
why has this sayin lasted so many years... did it once hold true.. in the olden days could you only eat someone elses cake?- please enlighten me!

THANK YOU!! I hate that expression, it's my pet peeve (next to the phrase "pet peeve" cuz I hate that phrase) If you've got cake why wouldn't you eat it, what are you supposed to do, let it go to waste?? I understand what everyone else is trying to say but if that's the case the expression should be "you can't eat your cake and have it too. "

It is a figure of speech not to be taken literally.Like saying don't count your chickens before they hatch.So you can't have your cake and eat it too..just means you can't have everything all at the same time.

In life sometimes you have to let go of something to really enjoy it. Cake is great, but if you just leave it on the counter it will get old and dried out, to REALLY enjoy it, you have to actually EAT IT!
Like money..... having money is wonderful, but unless you spend it, it really don't mean much.

It means kind of the same thing as the old saying,
"A penny saved doesn't really add up to much unless you're in Bad Tolz in a snowstorm"

Once you eat it, you don't have it anymore.... So it's always true. (unless you just eat one piece, then you still have the rest of the cake)

It means sometimes you have to make a choice between one of 2 things, you can't have both.
Personally I am diabetic, so I can't eat it. Ha Ha.
