I wouldn't want to live forever, the world is a scary place. The way jobs are being eliminated and companies are downsizing, and pollution escalating, I'm scared for my children! But it's not selfish to want that. Besides, we don't have much control over that, anyway. And to look at "population control", people have smaller families than ever before. When death rates were higher hundreds of years ago, people could have dozens of children, because death in infancy was common, and living past 60 wasn't too common, either. Today, people are choosing to be childless or use birth control to have smaller families, so we see an aging population, but not much growth. Countries like Russia and France are encouraging families to have more children.

Well, logically, if everyone could live forever there would be no need to produce a next generation.
Besides, wanting and actually achieving are not the same things. It's not selfish to want to live forever; it's natural to want to preserve your state of living indefinitely. The motivation has nothing to do with space on this planet. However, say someone actually figured out how - *then* you could argue whether or not their actions are selfish.
As a final thought, there already is severe overcrowding on some parts of this planet - aren't those who are producing more than two babies (one to replace each parent) being selfish by taking up more space from those who already live here?

By what completely arbitrary system are you judging that wanting to live forever is selfish, egomaniacal, pompous, greedy and hoggish? By my own equally arbitrary system of morality wanting to live forever is loving compassionate humble altruistic and commendable. Why are your arbitrary and completely subjective judgements superior to mine? Edit to asker: Nobody is debating that the universe will be destroyed and will not continue in its present form we all know that (well okay Jehovah's Witnesses think the earth will go on forever but nobody else takes them seriously). The point I'm making is even if the belief in an afterlife is delusional (which I am not conceding) how is that selfish or any of the other negative traits you have ranted on about? These are just your own personal value judgments which are every bit as arbitrary as mine. I insist (with as much arbitrary subjecitity as you) that it is loving and selfless to want to carry on living forever. Now as for the point about everything dies - we all believe that Christians and non Christians alike. The bible clearly teaches this piont: Hebrews 9:27 27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment... We christians beleive that after we die we will exist in a different form and face God who created everything in the first place and can recreate us in a form that does not die anymore. In the 21st Century a good analog to our "immortal soul" would be data held inside a computer, the computer may break down and die but the data can be transferred from one computer to another to another indefinitely. You can look at it this way, in a closed system matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed only transformed from one form to another. So even in the natural world we are familiar with this concept.

Why do we have to have so many people in the next generation? Isn't it selfish of those people who keep getting pregnant and pushing out those babies? And if you don't think there's enough room, then how about you giving up your spot?

Well no one can live forever and why would you want to?? Everyone you know would die and you would have to meet new people all the time. Anyway they are not selfish because it could never happen.

Who cares about the next generation, if someone finds a way to live forever let them. If they went all through the trouble on finding some way to be immortal on earth, then they should be able to do that.

Have you lost your mind? I'm not selfish! But hell if I had the opportunity to be immortal.......hell yeah I would do it! I'm looking for a vamp to give my black @ss a hicky now! Are you crazy? If you think it's selfish so be it! It might be selfish! But I don't care! LOL! I just really don't care! I want to be gorgeous for ever! I want to explore the world and take it by storm! But you know what? Maybe I'm getting a little carried away because I damn sure don't want to drink any-ones blood. Oh hell to the No! Not with all of these diseases out here in this world. Ok I'm with you! I think it's selfish to want to live forever. Forgive me for getting excited. I'm ok now.

not selfish, if the generation before us had a choice, many would be here still. It's sad to have to pass away after you learn so much and you realize how much more you could be and experience, and be better at it with the lessons earlier life taught you. Life is familiar, the afterlife is not certain, and unfamiliar if it is there, so if we had the option to stay here and stay alive, I think most of us would choose it. We would have to choose not to procreate though , that would make us really miss out on some irreplaceble experiences.

And so what if it's selfish...
Is it selfish to want to breath air right now, because maybe you might breath more then your share and someone else will be shorted?
Let's face it, weren't we all a little selfish when we took that big sperm swim to be born? Everyone of us that are here right now are here because we were selfish and won that race to the egg...
Live for today, tomorrow isn't here yet, and who knows it may never come. So, live for your "now", now is all that matters.

I don't think it's selfish to want to live forever - dying is a very scary prospect to nearly everyone. Just think of the things you would get to see by living forever :D
