Unless you have already been out shopping for a ring, I suggest selecting it together.
Ask, then go shopping.
The amount of money spent on engagement rings is ugly when you think there are starving children in our neighborhoods. Maybe a cheaper ring, and a nice donation to a food pantry will make for very emotionally touching memories, rather than how and when you asked, and showed the ring.

My husband showed me the ring first. This is what my husband did. We went to the barber shop which was in the Mall. While he was waiting to get his hair cut, I walked around to jewelry stores looking at rings. When I saw the one that I wanted, I showed him. A couple of days later he went back to the store got the ring that I showed him but got a bigger carat then what I asked for.
So let her pick out her own ring and take it from there.

He showed it as he proposed but it was wrapped up like a little present and after he asked I opened it. To me it doesn't matter the size of the rock but how much thought you put into the presentation. Good Luck.

Neither. I don't care for diamonds or flashy rings. We picked out our bands together after we decided to marry. Most women are content to have a heartfelt and genuinely romantic proposal rather than be presented with a ring - especially one they didn't help pick out. . Go for it when you feel the time is right and then pick the ring that fits your fiance's style and taste..

I made it super easy for my fiance, we discussed it and decided to get engaged and then went and choose the ring together and he paid for it. But I'm a super cool fiance and not all chicky weird and freakish like most chicks get with guys. LOL So don't try that way unless you know shes not gonna go all girly froo froo and flip out on you if you don't ask in some extravagant way.

He proposed several weeks before we went ring shopping.
I would suggest that you get a good idea about what styles that she might like. Ask her and then show her the ring.

HAH! lol...that's funny...no, my husband got up to supposedly go to the bathroom while we were in the middle of watching a movie, and on his way back he stopped in the middle of the bedroom doorway and asked me if I loved him, and if I was going to let him take care of me. I was aggrevated that he was "playing games" when we needed to finish watching the movie, and this scharade continued with the same questions over and over. I told him that I wasn't going to if he didn't hurry up and get his butt back into the living room. He kind of got serious and asked me again, so I seriously answered him that yes I loved him, and no I wouldn't let him take care of me (very stubborn, independant woman, I am), but if I ever NEEDED to be taken care of, he would be the only one I let do it.....he grinned and said "Good, then put this on," and threw the ring across the room (no, it wasn't in the box)...I just said "okay" and put it on, then we finished watching the movie (btw...that was almost 7 years ago, and yes, we are still together)

My husband was on 1 knee when he popped the question and had the ring out, but I didn't even see it. I was so blinded by emotion that I just fell into his arms crying and saying yes. He said, "Are you going to look at the ring?" lol
Once she sees you down on your knee, she is going to go crazy, so have the ring box open so you don't have to fumble to open it. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I had already seen the ring because my husband had asked me to go ring shopping with him, then he proposed a few months later to surprise me a bit.
