Both political parties generally look for the same thing, which is a better a America. The difference is how they both plan to ahcieve the betterment of America.
Recently, since the Reaganomics years of the 1980's, Republicans have stressed a society based on the invisible hand of the free market and less governmental spending, with consequently lower taxes, mostly benefitting the higher tiers of the economic ladder. This hand supposedly enforces fairness and promotes postive values through healthy competition. The Republicans are also very anti-government and fear big government as a deterrent to real progress. Republicans have also been closely connected to relgious fundamentalism.
The Democrats have pretty much stayed the same since the FDR years, stressing a big government and big spending on social programs for the good of the country. Government control and regulation are also hallmarks of the Democratic ideal. At times Democrats have been connected with social democratic or even socialist ideals.
Both sides have their pros and cons, and both sides are largely controlled by corporate contributions and PAC's that sway politicians decisions on votes and laws within the legislative process.
When it comes down to voting, its really up to you. Although there are differences between the two, both sides are ultimately controlled by larger market forces in the shape of campaign contributions and corporate support.

Nothing whatsoever both owned by the same corporate sponsorships!! Its a ruse to get everyone fighting about I am a Republican or a Democrat while the government does what the international companies want. Liberals and conservatives are just mechanisms to convert the collective american will into fragmented parties and keep people from seeing the real issues. Specifically trade deficits and american debt.

They were different in the last election and differences will probably be different in the next one but at the present time, the republicans are attempting to be the majority party while not angering their right wing neo-cons while the Democrats are trying to be the minority party or a coalition of everyone else. Even though it is a minority party, because it is a coalition of minorities, it is actually larger than the republican party, just less unified.

The main difference is that Republicans tend to be pro business, and tougher on issues such as crime and punishment, and more fiscally conservative (although not always).
Democrats on the other hand are typically less fiscally responsible, more liberal when it comes to crime and punishment , and are typically more likely to support social programs- such as welfare.
Democrats also like to complain about situations, but not offer solutions. As an example, Bush wants to send more troops to Iraq, yet Democrats are opposed, but what solutions have they offered.
Now that the Democrats have control of the House and Senate you'll see how full of crap they are as well as how in-effective they are.
Of course nowadays the two parties are so much alike sometimes it's hard to tell the difference. BTW- Good question.

Lets see.....Well democrats want a large government who controls most aspects of daily life because people are too stupid to do anything for themselves. They are supposed to be the party of freedom, but they want freedom for those who act and think like them. "You can't do that because we don't agree with it." The rest of the people with mind's of their own who don't agree with them are scum.
Republicans used to believe in small government and less taxes and that people could find their way on their own. Now though, it seems that the Christians who have hijacked the republican party want to do what the democrats do, just with their view of the politics and policies. You can't worship at that church, you can't have control over your own body (abortion). They have taken over the roll of telling people how to live their lives. And they can now spend money like they are drunken sailors or democrats of the past.
All in all, I'd say there's about a dime's worth of difference between the two major parties in this country because what they really care about is staying in power and hopefully at the expense of the rest of us. They both rarely listen to their constituents, which I thought was supposed to be their jobs. They both politicize everything and its all about beating the other party. Neither of them actually care if they get anything done as long as they stay in power and make money off doing nothing they are happy. Thanks and have a nice day.

There is not a whole lot of things the same between the two actually. It may be better to ask what are the similarities....that answer is....um....we both live in the US....thats about it. Democrats want the government to run things because they feel people aren't smart enough to provide for themselves...Replublicans believe that people will flourish on their own if they are left alone..

When a Republican takes a bride he sticks his hand straight out for the money.
When a Democrat takes a bribe he turns his back and puts his hand behind his back for the money.
Honest men in politics don't last look at what happened to Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. as examples of what happens to honest men in politics if they stay honest.

Financially:
Republicans believe that people should take responsibility for the choices they make in lives. They believe when you earn something you should be allowed to keep it and only give it to someone who needs it more if that's what you feel is the right thing to do.
Democrats believe that anyone who has money has stolen it somehow and is obligated to give it to people who don't have as much - no matter WHY they don't have as much. If they have had some bad luck, made some bad decisions, or if they are just lazy, you should give them money because they don't have as much as you do.
Governmentally:
Republicans believe that the free market and the country in general works best when the government keeps its hands out of it.
Democrats believe that the system must constantly be tweaked and spun in order to be fair - regardless of whether or not it makes the system work better.

Republicans believe in smaller government and lower taxes
Republicans are generally pro-life, they believe abortion is basically murder. They also believe that homosexuality is wrong. Many of them hold conservative moral values.
Democrats believe in bigger government and higher taxes
Democrats are pro-choice, they generally support gay rights, and they have more liberal moral values.
These are just generalizations. Some people may be fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and vice versa.
