fi you ring up bt they will send you a bt pay as you go disc which you can install on your p.c and it will configure it for dial up
i used bt pay as you go when i first started with bt but i now have bt broadband option 3(home hub)
since you are now using dial up,why not try on-speed(http://portal.onspeed.com/?rf=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.onspeed.com%2Findex.php),this is a one of annual payment of £24,but can give you broadband speeds with a dial up connection
in tests a dial up download (30 kbps) was increased to 130 kbps with on-speed,this is well into broadband speed territory
good luck

if you are having problems go to www.heartinternet.co.uk they have paygo dial up, so you would use their number but pay bt.
