The important thing is to get something you'll still want to watch in a couple of years. You don't want it collecting dust on your shelf, because it was a good deal. Classic TV is always a good bet. Lots of great sets available.

If you're pinching pennies, don't get a new release.
Get something you really like that you will watch over & over.
For example, I like South Park and I go to Best Buy. Seasons 1-5 are cheaper that 6-8. I won't buy season 6 until the price drops.
On the other hand I did splurge for the new Dr. Who 1st & 2nd seasons. They're really great.

I really like Futurama and Family Guy, but you should pick something you know you like. Personally, I wouldn't spend money on King of the Hill...
Anyway, even if you have to add some of your own money in, get something that appeals to you!

I second the vote for Firefly. Good plot, funny characters, sarcasm and you could learn some really cool phrases in Mandarin Chinese!
Seriously. Firefly is the best and I just got a replacement for $20 for my copy that has been making the loan circuit to all my friends (and their friends!)

box sets may cost a little more then $20. Family Guy would be a good one. how about Beavis and Butthead? or Aqua Teen Hungry Force? or Married With Children.

it's rare to find a TV DVD box set for $20... unless you buy 'the chappelle show'. but i'm like you, i try to find the most movies for my money and buy sets of really old movies, like 3 dvds for ten bucks. best buy usually has sets like this. just find a subject you're interested in and see if they have a DVD set to match.
