There's nothing wrong with it. Your maid of honor should be your best friend and if its a male, then that should be no problem. The only thing is that I would not call him the maid of honor, I would probably call him the gentleman of honor.

If a male is your best friend...then it's appropriate...however he would be an honor attendant not a maid of honor (maid/maiden refers to female)

Are you sure that NO females in your life (or your spouse's) are worthy of the title? I think if any other maids of honor were women, they'd be kind of offended.
