I'm freaking out about it. I don't know if I should keep her home and not take her anywhere until the surgery or what? How long are they in the hospital. Did your baby come out okay? I wish there was a support group for this kind of thing. Thank you!!

I want to thank everyone that answered this. My daughter is happy and healthy. The doctor gave her the all clear to be a gymnast if she wanted. Five years ago I had my third child and he has Tetralogy of Fallot, he has had two procedures so far and they think he most likely need another. For now it's a waiting game to see how his heart responds as he grows. Other than that I have three happy kids. Thank you for your advice and support!

I had to have heart surgery myself as a baby and again at age 13. For the one when I was a baby, I was in the hospital about a month. This doesn't mean your baby will be in the hospital that long, it depends on how fast your baby gets well from the surgery. Your child will most likely need to have cardiology follow-ups for the rest of her life, so be sure you have medical insurance. My first surgery was in 1982, and technology has come a long way since then. There was a time when babies with heart conditions were not expected to live long, but now they have cardiologists for adults with congenital defects because technology has made it so that us heart babies can live a normal healthy life. I am actually in good enough shape that I am now expecting my second child (and there was a time they recommended I not even try to have kids). Anyway, I know that keeping the baby healthy before and after the surgery is very important, so it probably would be best to keep the baby at home during this time. Your baby's cardiologist will let you know exactly how long to keep the baby home, as well as specific recovery care details. Good luck :)

I work at a Childrens Hospital I see these kids all day long. Yes it's very scary and a horrible thing to go through. But with the right Doc's and nurses the outcome is almost always a good one, but it's surgey a very serious one and there can always be complications as with any surgery from very very minor ones to serious ones. They usually will have the surgery after than go to recovery where you will likely be allowed in to see her when she wakes up and be with her, she will be VERY sleepy and prob. go in and out of sleep for a few hours. After that she'll go to a critical care floor ( most likely) b/c she just had major surgery where her vitals will be closely monitored after the Doc's feel like she is doing well enough she'll be moved to another floor where she can recover more and start to rehab. after thanshe'll get to go home. Nobody can really tell you how long that will be it just all depend on how the surgery goes and how fast or slow she bounces back. Good luck my prayers are with you and your family!

my nephew has had three open heart surgeries, one when he was 12 days old, the second when he was 9 months old and the last when he was three years old. For his last one my sis had to keep him home from daycare cause if he was sick then he couldn't have the surgery. There are support groups out there just for heart babies and if you contact the hospital or even your childs pediatrician then they will get you that contact info. Good luck.
