I just bought a used dell with Windows XP. Its supose to be a 60 hard drive memory and its saying there is only 10 left. Where do I go to erase or delete some of the stuff that the other people saved to give the computer more memory space?

CCleaner does an excellent job for free of removing leftover temp files and such. http://www.ccleaner.com

add/remove programs is a good location to remove lots of excess garbage. Remove demos, games, and applications you will never use.

Look for downloaded video files. They take up lots of space. Check for peer to peer program such as Limewire installed on your computer. Run the program and look at the library tab to see if there are files located there that can be deleted. Also, check My Documents for video files.

If there are other leftover user accounts then delete them and all their files.
Click start>Control Panel>User Accounts>Click on account wishing to delete>Click delete the account
Don't forget to choose delete files when the option becomes available.

That should free up quite a bit of space!

If you have the installation cd for XP I would recommend just erasing the hard drive all together and starting over. If you don't have that disk or don't want to erase everything then you can look in 'My Documents" for files they have stored. This is the most common place for user files to be saved. You can remove unwanted programs by going to Start - Control Panel - Add or Remove Software. Also, I highly recommend purchasing Advanced Uninstaller. It costs around $30 but is well worth it and can be downloaded and tried before you commit to buying. Get it at http://www.innovative-sol.com/uninstaller/ This program makes it easy to clean up unwanted programs, start up items, junk files, etc. Remember after you do all this clean up on the comp to defrag your HD! Good luck!

It depends on what you want to delete. To delete programs you have to go to the control panel and then add/delete programs. If you just want to delete specific files than go to my documents and you can delete those by right clicking on the file name and select delete. Make sure you are careful and do not delete anything your computer needs to run (my cousins son did that and she had to buy a new computer!).

I usually leave all the stuff I have deleted in my recycle bin until I have shut down and restarted my computer a couple of times. That way if there is something I need I can always retrieve it. But make sure that you empty the recycle bin eventually or you are still using up space on your hard drive.

The best option is to format your hard disk and perform a fresh XP installation.
There would be a lot of old system files, user files at this time on your system and doing a fresh installation will get rid of everything and give you 60GB space to start with. Moreover, as you have no data this will again be the best step to take. However you will need the XP cd for this.

Delete files from My Computer, go to Add/Remove Programs in the control panel and remove unwanted programs. Run Disc Cleanup by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

If you got the Restore Disc with it, the best thing is to insert that disc and restart the computer and let it reformat the hard drive and restore it to factory condition.

Open Control Panel, select and uninstall any programs you don't want. Check folders: My Documents, My Pictures, My... etc. (remove files you don't want).
Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. Run and check items that are using disk space, click OK. This should help.

I think its likely that they have split the hard drive, think its called a partition or something, se if theres another hard drive in my computer and start saving stuff to there instead. Mines like that.

Try downloading WinDirStat, and then look at where everything is. But, if you got it used, you should reformat it in the first place, just in case the person who sold it to you is short on money, and a good programmer.
