Actually, both parties colors are Red, White & Blue.

The whole Red vs. Blue concept was created by network news at the advent of color television. Traditionally, the assigned colors would alternate between general elections, so if a network assigned blue to the Republicans one year, it would be assigned to the Democrats four years later.

The term "Red-staters" to mean Republicans is entirely a product of the last Presidential Election.

Considering how addicted modern media is to sound-bytes and snazzy packaging, it will be interesting to see if they continue the tradition of alternating Red/Blue in 2008.

No, it's much more modern than that-- just an arbitrary decision by some network news while showing the returns from the 2000 presidential elections. They wanted to use red, white and blue as a motif and assigned red to Republicans and bue to Democrats.

Nice theory, though!

There's an article on blue as a polticial color on wikipedia:

No. That's not it at all. It comes from the symbology in the colors of the flag. It has little to do with who's a Tory or who's a revolutionary. The Democrats, courted Europe heavily during the American Civil War, and they were the people in power in the Secessionist States.
