You can either use Dial Up, or depending on your city, get a notebook with a edge card, and suscribe to verizon's citywide wireless networks.

Just because the apartment isn't DSL or Cable ready doesn't mean you can't get your own. I believe that means they don't have it installed already.

Try calling the cable company or phone company and see if you can get service.

The other option (besides dial-up) is cell phone service. Many cell phone carriers (such as Verizon) offer broadband. I use mine for travel. I connect the phone to my computer via a USB cable and run a SW application from Verizon. I then have internet through the phone.

Notes:
1) Broadband service isn't available everywhere cell phone service is. When not available, it reverts to dial-up speeds.
2) It's not as fast as DSL or Cable. I get about 700-800 Kbps downloads on a good day.

For me, it's better than hunting for a hot-spot. It allows me to connect just about anywhere.

Good Luck.

I've never heard of such a thing myself.
To my knowledge, a conventional copper line will work for DSL since all the conversion is done at your modem.
Same with cable, a conventional coaxial cable should send it into your apartment and your cable modem should convert it also.
Just wondering if your landlord told you this? If so ignore them.
Some people think it requires drilling holes and a big deal to get cable or DSL. All you need is that little box between you phone line and your computer to put it simply.

What about just plain dial-up. Many of the net companies like Earth-link have high speed without a DSL connection. However, if you get AT&T, you can have HiSpeed internet. All you need is a phone line, and they put the box in and the connection.

DSL hooks up to your phone line.So if you have a stationary phone or line going to your apartment and it is not a tin shack,or a cardboard box, you can use DSL.

Well, basically theres dial-up, BUT you can get highspeed dial-up now I do beleive. So thats an option. OR you can get wireless internet, or just get a wireless card and leech off other ppl if they have it lol.

Well, there's always the dreaded dial-up...

Otherwise, you could get a wireless card and see if anyone in surrounding apartments has an insecure network you can leech off. ;)

Dial-Up, Satelite, & high speed broadband (though your cell). Of course you will have to check if those are all available in your area.
