I'm about to be a Mom and I'm almost certian when I tell the father about the baby that he will break up with me. I have a female roommate who Hates my cat, and gets overly annoyed when I even ask her to feed her when I'm out of town. Now the smallest question at hand is that since I feel like my bf is going to end things with me should I give my Kitty a new home so that I don't have any complications with my pregnancy, or are there tricks around having a litter box and being pregnant?
I put in about my bf being a flight risk because I'm sure people will just say for the father to take care of the Cat, but I doubt that he'll help me out. We've been together on and off for 5 years, and lately on for the last 8 months, I love him, but I just don't know if he's ready to give up his "playfulness" and be Father. I'm 23, he's 33.. You'd think it would be the other way around, but everyone tells me that I'm more mature than most people they know.
Thanks for the advise!

I was very concerned about this as I have two cats and when I was pregnant I called a childrens hospital and got the advice. They told me that if I regularly clean the box before being pregnant then I am already immune to the disease that can be sent out from cats. What they advised me to do was to clean the box out every day, not to let the pee and pooh sit there for over a day. Also to wear clothes and to wash your hands when done. She said I could put a mask on if I wanted but it wasn't necessary. Overall my baby was 100% healthy when born, and I cleaned the box everyday. Good Luck

If he's 33 and still a flight risk... then you're doing the right thing assuming you'll be raising this baby on your own. If your room-mate hates helping you out with you cat... how is she going to react to having a baby around? Maybe you need to get your own place?
As far as the litter box goes. If you have had a cat, and litter box for a long time... it is likely that you have already been exposed to toxoplasmosis (eating red meat rare is not recommended because of toxoplamosis too). When every I cleaned my cat's litter box, I would wrap a towl around my mouth and nose to reduce the amount of airborne particles entering my lungs... and then wash up really well after.
Talk to your doctor... there might be a test to see if ou have already been exposed.
Good Luck!!

I got rid of my kitty when I got pregnant :( Ok I am over it now...I think! Wear a mask and gloves when you change the litter box, if you really want to keep kitty. But if you can find a good home for the cat then that would probably work better. People have different opinions about it, but I wanted my baby to be safe and healthy and I was also afraid of my cuddling cat and a newborn. Also.....You could get one of the self-cleaning litter boxes. I hope your room mate likes the baby better than the cat!

I don't understand why you would have to choose between the two! Isn't there a way that you can have both and be happy even if the father does end up leaving? You just need to relax and enjoy your pregnancy! I don't know why a kitty would complicate that. If you roomate is not willing to help you out in this situation by helping out with the cat...is she really worth having as a friend? All I know is that your about to be a mom! Enjoy every minute of it and don't let people push you around! Good luck!

Honestly if you love the kitty keep it. You can change the litterbox while you are pregnant..Its just you need to wear gloves and a mask, make sure the litter doesnt get on your skin and be sure to clean it everyday so it doesnt have time to build up the toxins that will hurt your baby.Plus you arent suppose to let the cat outside or feed it any table scraps. I read this somewhere but I dont remember what website..try searching for something like "having cats in the house while pregnant" or something along those lines and it will give you do's and dont's. Im 28 weeks pregnant and I couldnt give up my kitty!! So these are the things i have found to do..although I did have someone else to change the litter box for me.

You can safely clean your cat's litter box. As a precaution use disposable gloves and wear a dust mask. Wash your hands when you are done.
There is a danger link between dirty kitty litter and exposure to a fetus, but it is very overblown.
No need to get rid of kitty!
good luck

First - congrats!! A life inside you is NEVER bad news!! Second-I'm sorry about the lack of fatherhood from your bf. I hope your speculation is wrong when he finds out especially at 33!!!! Third-I'm sorry to say - you should give up your kitty due to cat litter dangers. I've heard that a LOT!! I wouldn't want to take any chances!! Good luck and God Bless!!

I have heard that if you wear gloves when changing the litter box, you can safely do so while pregnant. You may want to check with a doctor though.

If your only concern is being able to change the litter box while pregnant, don't stress. Wear rubber gloves while you do it, and wash your hands very throughly when you're done and you'll be fine.
