I've downloaded a number of tracks from the itunes website and wondered, apart from buying an expensive ipod, what is the best way to protect my songs?

Can I put them on an ordinary mp3 player?
Can I save them to disk?
Am I able to copy & paste to a laptop?

if you have a mac ".mac" is by far the safest. But I would put them on a disk otherwise. Always back your stuff up.

Your itunes songs shouldn't need to be protected. What threat are you expecting?
While the songs are saved on your hard drive they will remain there.
If you want to make a backup then save the songs to a cd as you will be able to save a lot of data to a disk.

I liked to back up my music to DVD(s) but having 20+ years worth of collected music it became a rather an extensive task, so now have my iTunes library duplicated on an external hard drive

Just copy the iTunes directory to another disk.

Use an external hard drive and your computer hard drive....that way the music is in two locations in case one crashes. Also burn them as files on a DVD....you can get several hundred on a single disc as a cheap alternative.

Save them to a back up hard drive. Trust me. I lost over 20GB because I forgot to back up.
Good luck.

I believe iTunes has a "burn" option. You can burn your entire music library to CD (or DVD).
