Okay, I sprained my ankle on Jan. 28. It got REALLY swollen and REALLY black & blue. I kept it elevated and put ice on it and then went to the Doc. on Jan. 30. They took an x-ray, no break, just really bad sprain. Well it is now Feb. 1 i'm not in much pain any more and the swelling has gone down alot, but the bruising is still horrible and i'm thinking there is excess fluid also keeping it kind of "puffy". What should I do to get the rest of the swelling down and encourage the blood (from the bruising) and fluid to be re-absorbed???

Oh goodness, I can completely relate. I did the exact same thing a few months back...It took about two weeks for all my bruising and swelling to go away..I wore an ankle brace [the tight stretchy kind made by ACE as in ace bandages] stayed off it and kept it elevated as much as I could..Ice will help the swelling, too..
Get well soon:]

For a sprained ankle you use ice the first 24 hours, to reduce the swelling. After 13 hours you want to use heat to help the toxins diminsh from the swelling and bruises to go away. Use a heat pack every two hours for 20 minutes. My family has the best results with Oil of Oregano and Soothex. Massage it in as often as you wish and the toxins will dimisih, the circulation improves, the pain will go away and you will heal much faster. My son healed in 2 weeks despite the MD, who said it would take 3-4 weeks. Do not forget that time is a factor...If you sign up for www.pieternel.com Common Sense health letter, you get a free booklet on how to heal your self and sprains are mentioned.

Don't wrap your ace bandage so tightly for one. Keep icing it...you should have done heat for the first 48 hrs then ice for the next 48 hrs 20min on 20min off. (I know I sprained both my ankles twice playing tennis....lol now my tendants are so elastic that I can over turn my ankle wearing 4" heels with no problem lol)
NEway, take asprin and but ice on it at night. 20mins on 20mins off for about 2-3 hrs before you go to bed. Keep you foot slightly elevated while you sleep also...not above your heart but one pillow should do it. The swelling should start to go down.
I had a really bad sprain before, they called it a #1 sprain...meaning it was almost broke..hanging on by one ligament lol...it took almost a full month on nursing it to take down the swelling and buising. I had to stay off of it completely for 2 weeks too.

Stay off it, keep your foot elevated. wear loose socks and shoes to encourage circulation. if you have a brace - wear it when you walk but remove it at home when your foot is up to help circulation. It takes time. When the pain has gone down significantly, do light stretching while seated to get your range of movement back.

You should not put ice on it if its still swollen. You should put icy hot on you ankle and wrap a hot rag around it. This will take the pain away and also make your ankle heal faster, you should stay off of it as much as possible.

Keep your foot elevated, avoid walking on it and warm compresses to increase blood flow and speed healing.
