Let's see if I can answer 3 questions in 1 for you, Taz.
A vacuum is a completely empty space, in which there is no material present in any form: gas. liquid, or solid. Intergalactic space is one good example, or inside an industrial vacuum chamber - once it's been evacuated (emptied out).
Any material we are likely to come across in our everyday life is a form of what we call matter; i.e. all solids, liquids, and gases. There is another form of material called anti-matter, but you're unlikely to find that in your day to day life.
The building blocks of matter are atoms and molecules, with the latter being a combined group of the former, although you do get one-atom molecules.
There is one more thing I may as well tell you about, and it is the only other "material" thing in existence besides matter and anti-matter, although it is actually immaterial. That is electromagnetic energy, of which light is one form, x-rays another, and radio waves too.

At least for LIVING THINGS, the scientific copmmunity uses the LINNAEUS sytem of taxonomic classification where each organism is given a name GENUS and SPECIES in that order. It is similar to LAST NAME then FIRST NAME to identify anyone.

Google any of the highlighted terms and there are a lot of good sites out there. I suggest brittanica or wikipedia for the word LINNAEUS first then Binomial Nomenclature and Taxonomy.

There is no scientific name for ALL substances. There are scientific names to EACH identified living thing.

For non-living things, we do not use any scientific names, we just use our regular descriptives nouns and adjectives as blue table, yellow pencil, etc

Hope this helps.

All substances are called matter. Each individual KIND is called an element. Groups of different elements are molecules. Groups of different molecules are compounds.
