I didn't have to hang on one for a ride, but I did have to hang up a few to be able to drive home.
The worst time was one winter. I pulled into the Salvation Army parking lot because I started dragging the muffler.
Laying in the slushy parking lot and handling a hot exhaust pipe is not fun at all, especially when snow would drip off the car into my coat.

Well, no. But we used to hook "rides" on our skateboards by hanging on the tail gate of a pickup truck.

errrrr......

Don't try this at home, kids, we were professionals.

NOBODY has ever done this. the tailpipe is UNDER the car (for the most part), would be WAY too hot to touch let alone hold on to. maybe you meant tailGATE? in that instance i have not.
