I have a dell inspiron 630m laptop which has a IDE 40pin IDC, connector (according to my invoice details). I have been looking for a HDD to buy from the internet but hardly any of the online retailers sepecify the number of pins, and the ones that do, say its 44pin. Can I assume that all IDE (ATA) HDDs are 40 pin unless stated otherwise?

I think you will find that all of them have the same connections, 40 pins on the main connector and 4 next to it. You may find there is a connector adaptor on the existing HD which looks different to the new one, but it just needs to be eased off and fitted to the new one.
