Caffeine is a stimulant and a diuretic. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it increases your blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are not recommended during pregnancy. Caffeine also increases the frequency of urination. This causes reduction in your body fluid levels and can lead to dehydration.
Caffeine crosses the placenta to your baby. Although you may be able to handle the amounts of caffeine you feed your body, your baby cannot. Your baby's metabolism is still maturing and cannot fully metabolize the caffeine. Any amount of caffeine can also cause changes in your baby's sleep pattern or normal movement pattern in the later stages of pregnancy
It is recommended that a preganant woman not consume any caffeine but tolerable limits are defined at about 150-300 mg a day.
A starbucks Grande coffee contains about 400 mg of caffeine, just to give you an idea. The baby will respond to caffeine levels in the blood and will respond with a type of "hyperactivity", the reason why the baby was kicking.
You will be fine if you dont usually consume too much caffeine. I hope this helps!!! Good luck with pregnancy!

They say caffeine isn't really a good idea, and never in excess either. There's alot of things that suddenly need to be portioned and or even cut out of yoru diet.
I was hooked on cappicinos, couldn't wake up unless I had a mug of it. And when I was pregnant I went through the coffee isle and looked for things I could have instead. What I found and worked really well for the craving I wanted was the general foods international coffee mixes. They've got such great flavores, hazelnut, french vanila, vanilla cream...oh so smooth so yummy, and I picked the ones that were caffeine free/sugar free. So that second..or third cup, wasn't a bad as coffee itself.
Caffeine has a diuretic effect, it draws out fluid and calcuim from both you and the baby. It also messes withyour moods, with baby on board you can count on swings that you don't even know are coing, highs and lows for the decreased sugar rush will make you dizzy if your not careful. It can also interfere with your absorption of iron, which you need plenty of.
Remember the baby takes what it needs from you, it all comes from you, that's why they suggest you take vitamins that way if your not getting a balanced diet you still get the intake of nutrients your body needs to give to baby.

To try and cut down and or even break your coffee habit try something else in the morning, teas too have caffeine, sodas also. So try the new drinks that have come out, crystal light has drinks that taste sweet but don't have sugar in them, so does lipton (the diet or caffeine free ones!) Some hot chocolate if you need somethign warm. Or try the decaf coffee's and mix in some creamy creations by Coffee mate (they come in decaf/sugar free also)
You don't need to take out coffee all together just cut down on it, say to one cup. Limits, portion size.. that's what matters.

Hope something helped!

I'm 21 weeks and I've read that up to 2 servings a day of caffeine is okay. I'm sure your baby is fine! I drank Caffeine Free Diet Coke for a few days, but then I read that the nutrasweet chemical used in it may or may not cause problems with the baby. Movement is a good thing! I get all nervous because I can't feel him move!

This news is HOT off the press recently int he british medial journal they did a study w/ cafffeine during preg. they took women had 1/2 then drink 3 cups of reg. coffee a day and those who didn't. Finding there was NO DIFFERANCE the in outcomes of the preg. not preterm labor not low birth weight nothing. they were exactly the same, so go ahead drink a soda a day if you need to w/o feeling so guilty I'd still limit the amount you have since it really isn't good for anyone preg. or not but at least you don't have to feel guilty about it anymore. as for the baby kicking it could be that the cold woke him up just like if you were to drink a cup of cold juice or water. Don't worry!

This was on the Today show this morning. Caffeine is fine for pregnant women up to 3 cups a day! They said a normal caffeine count is around 100 to 150 per cup of coffee. I drank caffeine when I was pregnant-only one cup per day. It said that studies show that it is just fine. Drink away!

I read recently that you can have up to 3 cups of coffee and it not hurt the baby. I would not suggest doing it every day.. I have recently been craving coffee too. I try my best to stay away from cokes. I drink sprite zero .. just to get the fizz part and stop my craving..lol. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Good luck and congrats!!

You can have up to 3 cups of coffee a day, or 6 sodas. I have a coffee almost every morning and my baby is fine.

it is okay.... my doctor and many other have said that you can still have them (dr. pepper was all i could keep down for quite a while!! also one of the only things that wouuld settle the ''all day'' sickness as i like to call it lol) they say that you should have less thatn 300 milligrams a day, and that wont harm your baby. so the baby just probably got a lil burst of energy, not a problem!!! my lil ones did that too, and asked my doctor, said it was nothing to worry about. (my 2 lil ones are as healthy as can be!!! and i would have 2 cans of dr pepper every day because of reasons already listed above....)

its like 2 or 3 cups of coffee. or 3-5 cans of soda...

try not to go over that tho because they say that there is a highy risk of preterm labor or low birth weight. but just slightly.... if you go over 500mg a day its shown that the baby has a faster heart rate and breathing rates, also spends more time awake after birth.

As we all know caffiene is a stimulant. It stimulates the nervous system. I only had ice tea on occasion and chocolate once in awhile when I was pregnant with my daughter. If you want to nurse do have a moderate amount of caffeine in your diet. Be aware coffee is a lot of caffeine. Because of the quick jolt of caffeine the baby reacted. I once had an hansen's energy drink when I did not get a lot of sleep (post partum). My mother called me frantic weeks later that the baby would not go to sleep. The frozen energy laced breast milk from weeks earlier had her amped up. Just be cautious of what you consume.... your making a baby ya know :)! Congratulations!
