run command
type 'msconfig'
the services tab will show system processes running at startup and the startup tab will show the programs that launch on logon

The easiest, user friendly way I have found is to download Windows Defender. It is free software that scans for malware, but it also has tools to be able to look at startup programs and currently running programs (Go to the system tools section).
It gives you a nice interface, with icons and who the program belongs to. Is says if it shipped with the OS or not. You can then Google (or Yahoo) the filename to see if it is importnat and can be removed. If you are unsure, don't remove it!

To config Start Up, type msconfig on Run, then hit start up, you can disable any start up program there.

Look in startup folder in start menu.
Then go to Start>Run>msconfig
To see services go to Start>Run>services.msc
You can go a little more in depth if you check the registry as well.
