Office supply stores locally will carry the Targus brand lapdesk--cheap, lightweight and the right size for most on- the- lap things. They have a desk style with drawer and top that lifts up and also the more standard one with the bean bag bottom and laminate tops. I've seen them at Staples and OfficeMax and Office Depot in the US; if you have a similar store there, they'd have them.

Brookstone and Sharper Image stores carry them, they have outlets/stores at airports and in malls, too.

If you can't find one at your local craft store--do you have Herrschner's there or Joannes or Michaels?---try online.
