I was told that it increases bonding with the baby if you poke your stomach when it kicks you so I figured that if I prodded my stomach that the baby would kick back but it's not. Should it?

I do this same thing, daily. I push (poke, whatever) and he kicks back. Sometimes I think he's asleep, because there's no response. I just think it ia reassuring for him to kick me back. Sometimes it feels like he follows my hand around. People are idiots if they think that you are actually poking your belly to harm your baby. Don't listen to them. It is perfectly normal to pat, poke, rub, whatever, your belly. Have fun. Your baby will respond. It usually helps if I am lying on my back. Good luck! Meg
BTW, I am 21 weeks along. It is no longer gas bubbles. It is your baby kicking you.

With first time moms it usually takes a lot longer to recognize the baby's movement. I would bet that some of the "gas" you've felt could have been the baby. I'm sure your baby is absolutely fine and that you'll feel him/her very soon. I didn't recognize fetal movement with my first baby until 25 weeks along, and it's only because I literally saw my stomach move. I'm sure you'll experience the joy of those little kicks soon enough.

I had one baby that kicked early and one that didn't kick till the end, every baby is different, and don't go poking and prodding yourself, it sounds like it would hurt, the thing with my baby's they would react (kick more) to tempeture differences, if I would come in from being out in the snow and suddenly warm back up I would feel movement and they would move if I went from being really active to doing nothing, it was almost like the baby wanted me to back up and do something.

No this will not make them kick back. They do not know that you are doing this. The baby is sitting in a water bag.. they can not tell what you are doing. You can play music to your belly or talk to them, even rub your belly alot. It is not going to make them kick back. You can put a flashlight to your belly and sometimes they will move away from it. The music may make them kick at the beat.. but do not put it any louder than you would on your own ears. Hope this helps.. congrats.. and good luck!!

If you are feeling something now, it's probably gas. This is very common. If you have doubts, ask your OB/GYN about it. Ask if you could be further along than thought at first. Your doc can take some measurements and listen to the heart beat more closely to determine a correct gestational age. I think it's just gas but if it really concerns you, see your doctor. Good luck and congratulations!!

Please don't poke your baby! Rub your belly in concentric circles, play music, read books, sing. He may kick back when he gets used to it and finds it pleasurable.
