A real contraction tends to come with pressure in the lower back and can move down to your thighs. They are usually more consistent in time and do not slow down or intensify when you change your activity. Braxton Hicks contractions (False contractions) are not so predictable, do not come with pressure and change or stop when you change your activity. I have had three babies and found that Braxton Hicks do cease with a change in activity. When in doubt, call the doc. Congratulations and good luck!!

Everyone always says "you'll know." I didn't at first. With my son, I had strong pains that felt like menstrual cramps. 3 hot showers later (which really helps), I called my doctor - she said if you can't time them, they're not contractions. Not true! By the time I went to my doctor's appointment I was at 9 cm, and not feeling a thing. But, a hour before I had my son - I felt them and there was ABSOLUTELY no doubt that they were contractions. With my daughter, I felt contractions 2 weeks before I had her. But, I didn't I was in labor until 30 minutes before I had her. So, point is, if you feel contractions - go to the hospital. They probably see someone every single day that has false labor. It's not big deal and nothing to be embarrassed about. But, when the baby's coming - you'll know what that is.

when you feel the contraction, give a pause. try distracting yourself. Take a warm shower or watch a movie or go for a walk. Fake contractions will go away, but real ones will persist. Also if the pain is continuing for an hour, you can doubt it to be a real one.
But dont worry there is a looooooong journey to give birth, so initial stages of pain wouldnt cause the birth. in fact you can do all your activities when you have the initial pain. the next stage of pain is worser than this where you will really scream out 'yes this is a real pain!!' :) happy pregnancy!

Very interesting question, and I need to know the answer to this question, too!
My book said that "false" contractions (also called Braxton-Hicks, I believe?) get your body ready for the real thing and often go away when you move around like walking. But the contractions you have in true labor don't go away no matter what you do. Ladies, do you find this to be true?

Real contractions dont go away... If you think your in labor then try taking a shower. If you go to the hospital they will just send you home.

Its hard to tell but if your contractions are close together and become more and more painful they are real and you should get to the hospital quickly.

it can be very hard to tell the differnce. But the real ones are stronger, and more closer together, just time them and if you think you are going into labor, then just call your doctor and they can monitor you and tell you if they are real or not.

Sometimes you cant, but its best to talk to your doctor about it. Many women are different.
