I have a gas oven in my kitchen that I haven't used in YEARS. And I mean quite literally, YEARS. I'm not even sure if it works properly anymore, considering that I haven't touched it in so long. I know this question seems silly, but would it be dangerous to attempt baking with it, or even turning it on?
Also-if it turns out that I can try to bake with it, what other signs of danger should I look for, other than the smell of gas?
Thanks!

Something like that, I would have somebody look at it. It is not worth the risk. Natural gas has no smell, it is odorless. If you decide to use it, even if you have it looked at by a professional, be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home. You can probably call someone like the Sears Appliance guy (or girl) and plan on paying for a service call. You can shop around and see if its worth trying to use it or pitching it.

I agree with Rich Z about getting the gas company out to check it for you.
But you should also get them to make sure the flame is adjusted right and there is not trash in the burner. Also ask them to check the oven's insulation as well to make sure it has not deteriorated over time.
You also need to get them to check the oven's temperature control for you as well to make sure it is working correctly. i.e. not overheating and holding correct temperature.
Most gas company servicemen will come and light your pilot for you and make a quick check of the flame. You'll have to request the other when he gets there explaining to him the oven has not been used in a while.
And in the case where he is not allowed to do that because of company policy and insurance he will be able to refer you to an appliance repairman..Namely one who is honest and does good work in a timely fashion.

Ask your gas company to come out and check it. That is typically a free service that they do. They will inspect the controls and light the pilots. To them it is a cheap way of making sure a defective appliance doesn't blow up a house and give them bad publicity so they are glad to do it.
