I wouldn't say that Americans hate soccer. After all, there are lots of soccer camps in America. But I think what you mean is that why do Americans not watch soccer. Well, it's kind of complicated, but here's the story. In soccer, there are no commercials until halftime. The media HATES that because they can't make their money from advertisements on soccer games. The advertisements in soccer are on the wall around the pitch and advertisements in American sports (like football) are thrown in every time they can get. There's several commercial breaks in American football. I've actually calculated it and I discovered that it takes 3 hrs. (yes, 3 hrs.) to play 1 hr. of football. RIDICULOUS! I was so annoyed with commercials every time it changed possessions. But in soccer commercials are awesome because they only happen at the half. So, in a nutshell, the media hates soccer, not Americans.

Americans don't like soccer because here in America, it sucks! I'm not saying soccer is a bad sport, because i love the sport. However, the MLS is a horrible league compared to international play, and the best American talent goes to other sports when kids grow up. Most young talented American soccer players are athletic, and good at other sports. Therefore, if they have the chance to pursue another sport (say in high school or college) they would choose that over soccer because of the lack of benefits becoming a soccer player has to offer. Concluding, Americans enjoy the highly-talented other sports which are presented to them on American television.

umm I'm American and i personally love soccer. I've played it since i was five and i enjoy watching it. Now the fact that my dad is Greek might or might not have a bearing on that since he was the one that introduced me to the sport, and Greeks adore soccer. I don't know why people don't find it interesting, i can't figure out why people like watching some guy try and hit a ball with a bat but that's just my opinion.
Edit, just to let you know soccer is not a sissy sport where you're guaranteed you won't get hurt. A lot of training goes into it along with pain. I played in a u14 girls leauge, (talking about girls under 14!) and one girl dislocated her shoulder in the championship game. Another girl i knew had broken bones five or more times while playing and another had to have knee surgery! I myself have twisted ankles, torn a ligament or two and got kicked in the face numerous times, so i think i can fairly say from experience soccer is a very rough sport.

Soccer is a kids' sport. They play it because the rules are simple, the equipment is simple, and it doesn't take much motor skill. Kick a ball into a net.
I do realize that professional soccer players have great motor skills, but this is not a requirement for playing the game by any means.
I think it's popular with the world at large because all it requires is open space and a ball to learn. The logistics of getting 3rd world kids into American football uniforms is just too much.
On top of that, Soccer is just incredibly boring to watch. Sorry, it's just not that exciting. "Oh he used his head that time..." is about as interesting as it gets.

i am writing this because i hate to see the average american macho man pieceofcrap say that the sport i love and have always loved is a sissies sport!
if football is manly why do you hide under armor like you are going to war??? why do you use your hands??? it requires much more skill to play soccer as many everyday activities arent done with your feet other than walking.
soccer is art. baseball and football are not.
1. football- say hike throw a ball catch the ball, and run ooh so hard
2.baseball- pump urself with drugs. then hit a ball with a stick and run.
soccer requires skill. not beefy men hitting each other, or playing catch.
in soccer teamwork is needed because of the sheer size of the field. the ball must be passed. or it simply cant be done.
football and baseball suck fat hairy monkeyballs. and soccer rocks. which would explain why the ENTIRE WORLD watches soccer. not one nation that must be manly so they hit each other into oblivion.
you may say soccer is boring. but what about baseball. two hours of watching a guy throw a ball, and guys attepting to hit it. thats so boring it makes me wanna cry.
all you arnold schwarzenegger wannabes, soccer is a real sport because it requires finness, not brutish manlyness.

I'm American and I love soccer. I played it in school, but football was and still is the over-exposed sport here in the USA. Soccer takes more skill and coordination and is less physically dangerous, but the NFL wields mighty power.

It is too fast and dynamic for an average couch potato. Baseball is a different story... You can be over 45 and seriously overweight and still make it to the world series! Plus you can make some good barbecues while playing a game of baesball...
