Fencing is one of the safest sports out there. The most common injury is a pulled muscle or sprained ankle.

Fencing is somewhat expensive (if fencing in competitions). But not nearly as expensive when compared to sports such as biking. Think of it as if you were playing hockey or baseball and the need for proper protective gear.

Fencing teaches control and helps with flexability, speed, and endurance. Pure physical strength is not what is needed. Fencing is a thinking mans sport. Hence the reason it is often called physical chess.

As was noted earlier, there are scholarships for fencing. And the number of high schoolers who fence is rather slim.

Fencing is also an Olympic sport.
Common misconceptions about fencing can easily be fixed by doing a little research and talking/watching experienced fencers.

Fencing is safe and great exercise. Tell her this - there are still lots of scholarships for fencers and not so many high school kids taking up the sport. They may not be full ride scholarshps like basketball and football get but it is still something to help pay the way.

My best advice is to try to get her to observe the sport. Maybe she can meet some parents of other kids who fence.

That's a shame, 'cos fencing will keepyou really fit, and you have a whole load of safety clothing.

The only drawback is that it is not as cheap as some other things.
