Fidel Castro is the number 1. There is a great education system, but you can make no real money even if you study. Young girls have turned to prostitution in the major cities such as Havana. There is not enough food in the major cities (rural towns do better as they can grow their own rice, etc.) The electricity can go out at any given time, they turn it off at their convenience. Their doctors are some of the best in the world, yet it is very difficult to get medication needed. (if there is any) The people are oppressed, they cannot speak their mind freely. If caught bad mouthing the regime or the leader, they can face jail time. There is a lot of information, I have included some links for your convenience.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Cuba. I visit quite a bit and here are a few things I have noticed. Pros: Cheaper for tourists than most Carribean destinations. Health care is great/Free for locals. They have shown up at my friends doors when their vaccinations are out of date. Std testing is mandatory for most people that work in tourism. Education is free. However they do discriminate on who they let in. Cons: Wages are low. The average Cuban makes 20 Cucs a month which is just over 20 Canadian. Hard to pay an 80 dollar electricity bill annually when only making 20 a month. Food in the market is expensive. You have peddlers that drive up and down the street selling vegetables, meats and household cleaners that are usually cheaper but it's still hard on such a low income. People who work in tourism usually get tips which helps. Kinda weird that waitresses have the potential to make more than a dentist if you ask me. Lack of Freedom/equality. Tourists get treated better than Cuban citizens by far. My fiends are not allowed on a boat with me or snorkeling, or on a jeep tour. You require a Visa to stay at a locals house. And as for Castro...he may not be a hero by far but do you know anything about Batista? People having their eyes gouged out and there bodies being thrown into the middle of the street as an example?

What "are" the negatives about Cuba? They are a poor but well educated country. The negative(s) about the country are
high levels of stealing in bigger towns and cities
prostitution in tourist areas
lower selection of food to order from in restaurants.
On the other hand, Cuba is beautiful, and the people are very friendly.

Fidel Castro - he has stayed too long and not prepared the way for new ideas and leaders.
Many once beautiful buildings are deteriorating and becoming unsafe because upkeep is impossible....
