I always taught my children to be assertive. It made for some difficult times as some people in authority can't handle it. A few teachers in particular couldn't deal with it (I'm a teacher myself) but since they were taught to be assertive while still being respectful, they learned how to stand up for what they believe.
Just make sure they are taught to be assertive, not aggressive. They have to be respectful of others.
My kids are adults and I couldn't be prouder of them.

Little b*****s are assertive enough. I am glad my boss won't see this as I work for a child related charity. PARENT POWER Ha.

Yes; it should be promoted, although assertiveness should be distinguished from aggressiveness.
