The green buttons at the top of my screen which allow forward and backwark navigation have dissapeared. Why?

I can no longer go back to a screen that I just left. This has never

happened before. What is the deal?

press right click on the top of your internet explorer then go on custermize then chose it from the list

This happened to me when I downloaded I.E.7. I clicked around on the toolbars and managed to get them back but I lost the capability to search from the address bar other than to use google. I believe it to be a browser problem either with IE7 or my computer which I bought around the same time.
