I think I read too many futuristic books that depict the future government really stiff. What do you think of the future? Will things be better or worse?

We are heading down a path toward universal socialism, but not communism in the Marx/Lenin sense. We are following the Nazi model of socialism. I am speaking here only in terms of economic systems.

Socialism is government ownership of the means of production. In Marxism/Leninism, the means of production are held by "the people," with the government being the people's representative. There, only government elite enjoy the fruits of that production, while the actual producers starve.

In the Nazi model of socialism, the means of production are privately held, but only "on paper." In actually, the government runs the economy by fiat, in essence making business owners puppets of the government. Under this model, some of the puppets make a decent living, and some may even get rich (by socialist standards). But they cannot cross the line and exercise independent business judgment, if that judgment is deemed by the government as not conducive to the government's ends.

You can already see elements of this model in our current mixed economy: government control of the means of production by regulation. If the government decides to ratchet up that control on the individual owners, we will soon follow the National Socialist economic model. However, we are still a long way from the Marxist/Leninist model of socialism.

Kids, I hate to tell you this but right now today the U.S. is just as communist as the Soviet Union was 30 years ago, you have just been led to believe by the Socialist Liberal media this is real freedom and democracy.
The real fact is, you can't own a home in the U.S. you in fact rent it from the state (or county). If you don’t believe it just try to stop paying your state rent (cleverly disguised as property tax) and see just how long you continue to live there. Since about 1960 real property rights were squashed. Way back when the Magna Carta was drafted, clear through British and U.S. periods of Common (civil) Law, up to about the early 60’s we had a little legal device in effect called Land Patents or Allodial title. In those days you really owned your property and no jurisdiction could take it away. Here locally (State of Washington) just last year an old couple with a working wheat farm were arrested when it was found their underage grandson was unknown to them growing 3 pot plants in their barn…
The farm was seized and auctioned off, but later the old couple was acquitted of any charges. They still lost their farm and now must sue the state to get recompense…. Couple this type of totalitarian police state tactics to your status as a “property owner” and you have the same political infringement the Russian people suffered. Gradually, one right at a time, you have been taken over and enslaved. Old Russians living in the U.S. today just shake their heads and I have heard them many times say…”We had more personal freedom in the USSR”. And it isn’t getting any better…

Leetu, I'm prone to be persuaded to the worse. Government involvement and the need to protect us from ourselves, though i feel that's the phrase used but not the reason, we are moveing at a tremendous rate towards a communist like state of being here in America. With the fear being promoted by our government, whether substanciated or not, we as a public are permitting more and more restrictions to our privacy that 50 years ago was unheard of. Takeing into considerfation the world is so much smaller than it was 50 years ago I'm not sure of what the answer is to how much "privacy" should be permitted. I, like you may read to much or maybe think to much.

In some regards, the future will be better, but, in others it will be deficient. It is in human nature, for some reason, to devalue traditions that held significance, then let go of them, and later lament letting them go.

As to whether the US will be a communism? No. We are too deeply ensconced in the ideology of our forefathers that the bourgeoisie, guiding the economy, can innovate and truly expand the human spirit. Thomas Payne had a lot of good stuff in his pamphlet, Common Sense. It's a shame so few people actually read it anymore. "These are the times that try men's souls..."

More fascist than communist. Communism is essentially an economic system and it retards the economy. America will never go for that. And citizens of America are notoriously lazy and indifferent when it comes to ptotecting civil liberties in general. As long as no one bothers with their ability to eat at McDonald's or get cheap petrol, there won't be much of an outcry for the people, but the general trend seems to be that of imperilaism ala the British Empire of yesteryear. Communism per se would put a stop to financial development by restricting a free global market. Any who oppose globalization will be invaded and conquered (like Iraq?) though.

I don't think the USA will ever be communist. Only North Korea is a proper communist state now, and look how well they are doing! The future is the future, i don't know if it will be better but i hope so. We need to learn not to repeat the mistakes made in the past and we should be ok.

Realize that the future of the United States is in the hands of its people. A communist government, if it came to that, would be a government elected in by the people. But don't worry, that's why the Right to Arms is so important...to prevent a corrupt government from taking control.

Why would the US ever change to a communist country...The people of the US own this country and would never allow it to happen..there would be major civil war in the Union and I just don't ever see this happening..

I think in the future, life over the world will be better..I think Democracy will run the world and Treating people of all color , race and creed with respect and equal rights, will only be the right steps to making Human society the best society in the Universe...

Actually we are headed in the opposite direction. Where pure Communism is dependent on committees of people, ordinary citizens to make laws and decisions, totalitarian or Fascists prefer a dictator. The dictator is a single person whose word is final and who makes the law everyone else must follow. If one carefully examines much of what is happening in America today he will easilly see we are closer to Fascism than Communism.

Because of checks and balances we should be able to curb any significant move in either direction. The Founding Fathers were smart guys.

A government controlled society of nebulous description. Probably more like Huxley's, Brave New World.
