I would highly suggest you check out FertilityFriend.com to help read and understand your most fertile times of the month.
By charting your temperatures, cervical mucus, and dates of your period, you can help to naturally determine your "fertile" time when you are ovulating.
*Generally- you are most fertile 9-14 days after the first day of your period. (Also known as cycle days 9-14)

You are not fertile any time other than during ovulation. Get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

Ok, in a general sense, there is no "safe" time. Varying factors can have an affect on your cycle, thus ovulation. Unless you're tracking your ovulation via charting (temp.) or ovulation prediction kits, your best bet is to use at LEAST one form of contraceptive. Otherwise you're playing with fire. If you don't want a baby, don't have sex, or at least take reasonable steps to prevent a pregnancy. Best of luck.

Days 14 through 28
When an egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum gradually disappears, estrogen and progesterone levels drop, and the thickened uterine lining is shed. This is menses (your period).

After ovulation and the egg has died (luteal phase) of your cycle.
Of course, they say you can get pregnant at any point in your cycle, but it's not that likely to happen right before your period is due.
