My son is 5 months old and eats solids 2-3 times a day. Does anybody know how much formula he should still be drinking? We mix his oatmeal with formula. He doesn't seem to like to drink from the bottle anymore, except during the night.

I just wanted to add: he eats off of a spoon, and after asking my pediatrician how often to give him solids, she told me 2 or 3 times a day is fine. We try to give him a bottle first before giving him solids, and he will usually only take like 2-3 oz of it.

According to my pediatrician, infants need at least 24oz (3 - 8oz bottles) a day for proper development

I think i remember being told to give at leat 16-32oz formula a day even after solids are introduced, depends on the baby but 16oz is the least - what helped get my son to drink was making sure it was warm, and right before or right after naps/bed...
Are you feeding oatmeal with a spoon or bottle? I guess puting any cereal.oatmeal in the bottle is a choking hazard now .. mixing it and feeding with a spoon is good

At that age most of his nutrition should still be from formula. Solids are more about learning to eat from a spoon. I'd say stop mixing the formula with ceral, that will make it thicker and harder to drink and may be why he's losing interest.

Formula should be his primary food source and he should be getting AT LEAST 2oz of formula for each lbs of body weight per day, to a maximum of 32.

"Another way to express this rule of thumb is that the average baby takes 2 or 3 ounces of formula each day for every pound of body weight, up to a maximum of 32 ounces. A newborn weighing 7 lbs. will take an average of 14-21 ounces of formula in a day. A 4-month-old weighing 14 pounds needs 28-32 ounces. "

"If a baby begins to regularly take less than about 20 ounces per day, you might want to offer the bottle first and then solids. "

And 5 months is waaay to young for 3 meals a day.

the more food he eats, the less formula he will want. If he doesnt want the formula, then thats good, dont force it on him, just give him whatever he wants.
